Poetry analysis: Loving in Truth, by Sir Philip Sidney

A poetry analysis of the sonnet "Loving In Truth" by Sir Phillip Sidney can hardly avoid discussing, in the review, the difficulty most people have in putting their free thoughts to paper - particularly if those thoughts are an expression of romantic love. In "Loving In Truth," the challenge of writing a love poem is not the only hurdle for Sidney - he finds his writing Muse has left him as well.

The Elizabethan poem describes all the methods the speaker resorts to during his attempts to think of something loving to say, and the right words to express his feelings of love eloquently. For example, in the first stanza, he expresses his wish to get his lady-love to notice him and take note of his dream to have a loving relationship with her. He wishes that his pain and discomfort in struggling to get his love poem written might bear fruit when she actually gets to read it and that she might be more sympathetic to his suit when she knows how much he tried to convey his feelings.

The speaker tells, in the next stanza, how he studied the fine words of other poets, copied their literary inventions and read books in order to get the inspiration flowing in his own mind.

The next stanza details how he became more confused and held up with every new idea he tried. he goes on to describe his angry frustration as,helpless to think of anything, he bites his "truant pen." In other words, more modern words at that, he was truly beating himself up over it.

Then, inspiration dawns. It finally occurs to the poet that the best thing to do is to throw out other people's ideas and write from the heart. The difficulty most people have in putting their romantic thoughts to paper is well expressed in this poem. In "Loving In Truth," the challenge of writing a love poem almost beats the poet until - he finds his writing Muse has advised him well.
